NZ-first food data

1 min read

Both photo and voice analysis now prioritise New Zealand nutritional data when estimating carbs. NZ food composition data and NZ product labels come first, Australian data second, international data only as a fallback.

This matters because most overseas carb counting tools fail badly on NZ-specific products and meals. BBQ, kumara, NZ supermarket brands, kiwi-style takeaway food. The big international apps don't know any of this. They guess at it from the closest match in their international database, and the result is usually wrong.

For packaged products specifically, the app now searches food databases in NZ and AU for the exact nutrition label data before falling back to an AI estimate. If the product is found, the carb figure comes straight from the label. For packaged products this is essentially weighing-level accuracy without weighing.

Carbol is built for here first. That's the simplest way to put it.
